Making one from three

Machinery in the construction industry is often subject to heavy requirements. For example, the shovel of an excavator used in mining might have to shift 42m³ of material weighing 1.8t/m³– up to a total of 75t in one go. With such intensive loads in play, the connection elements of the swing bearing must be designed to cope. At Berrang, we begin to design the solution to such a challenge during the development phase by determining the preload forces in action. At a later stage, the friction coefficients are monitored in the series by using an in-house screw test stand – one of the largest in the world of its kind.

A manufacturer of commercial vehicles ordered three different parts from us for the attachment of a truck swing step. The individual parts had to be assembled in a number of processes.

The swing step needs to be mounted securely to the truck, but it must also be flexible – and as straightforward and affordable as possible.
